The Border Esk and Liddel Angling Club
Flowing through beautiful countryside with much of the bankside wooded with native hardwoods anglers have access to four beats. Border Esk; Canonbie 4 miles double bank; Langholm 4 miles mixed double & single bank. River Liddel; Lower Liddel 6 miles single bank , Newcastleton 4 miles single & double bank. With 18 miles of water to choose from, you can normally expect the rivers to be generally fast flowing and with beds of rock outcrop or pebble shingle with no natural weed growth. With the exception of high water, the Esk is normally ‘Gin Clear’ and although the Liddel often carries a peat stain this does not have an adverse effect on the fishing.
An enthusiastic membership, committee members and local rods are always willing to escort anglers to the most likely pools. The club believes that it is very much part the local community and helps boost the economy.

If you haven’t fished it before, you ought to. It’s not the most prolific, but it is, in my opinion, one of the most beautiful. From Langholm downstream to Canonbie, the Esk cuts through sandstone, with lush, steep banks of deciduous woodland. The pools can be difficult to wade and it could be a considerable walk to get to some, but you will be rewarded with spectacular backdrops and seclusion.
